Location
The city of Almere is the perfect location to host the 10th edition of AESOP-SFP in 2022. The city was created only 40 years ago in the new province of Flevoland. Almere is the largest municipality in Flevoland and – despite its young age – already the seventh-largest municipality in the Netherlands. The population of Almere is highly diverse, with inhabitants of 181 ethnicities and 153 nationalities and a high proportion of people with an immigration background.
Since its early development, the city’s planners have had a clear vision: promoting a healthy and sustainable environment for its citizens. To support this vision, Almere embraced the garden city perspective, connecting agriculture and urban developments on a regional scale within the Metropolitan Region of Amsterdam and with the productive agricultural hinterland of the province of Flevoland. The municipality has recently presented a Food Strategy and supports various local food initiatives. Additionally, to show how food production can be a local/regional prerogative, Almere established Flevo Campus, which aims to explore and promote innovations in the inclusive urban food supply, and organizes Floriade Expo, an International Horticultural Exhibition taking place in 2022. Under the theme ‘Growing green cities’, Floriade will present solutions, among others, in the field of (urban) agriculture, urban food strategies, planning healthy and sustainable food environments and rewilding cities.
